Is Acupuncture painful?

Acupuncturists use very thin, flexible, single use needles. These needles are much thinner than hollow needles used for blood draws. Most patients feel very little if any discomfort when the needle is inserted. Some locations on the body can be mildly sensitive but are rarely painful.

How does acupuncture work?

In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture works by helping to balance the body’s energy called Qi. Qi flows along meridians or channels in the body. Needles are inserted along the meridians to balance the body and allow it to heal. Through research, western medicine providers have seen that acupuncture can increase endorphin levels, lower pain, decrease inflammation, balance hormones, and stimulate the nervous system to promote healing and relaxation.

What will happen during my first acupuncture session?

After a thorough history and exam is performed, you will lay down on a comfortable table and acupuncture will be inserted into specific points along the body. You will relax with the needles for approximately 25 minutes.

How long does it take for acupuncture to work?

For acute conditions like a back injury, some people feel relief immediately or after only a few sessions. For chronic conditions that have lingered for months or years, most people will start to feel relief after several weeks of consistent care.
