How Our Chiropractors Treat Pregnant Moms In Lincoln Square, IL
Why Chiropractic is Essential Throughout Pregnancy
As the baby grows inside the mother, the center of gravity shifts forward, creating a dramatic increase in the curve of your lower back and stress on your pelvic joints. Also, a very important hormone called relaxin get released during pregnancy, helping the baby’s mother adapt to the changes while the baby grows. But if the lower back and the pelvic joint start to build stress, moving abnormally, nerves and the combination of the muscle, ligaments, and tendons start to get irritated, potentially making the pregnancy uncomfortable and increasing the risk of not having a natural birth.
Physical Changes: As I mentioned above, the release of the hormone relaxin makes ligaments “loose” to prepare for birth, but it can also lead to instability and pain. The Chiropractic solution is to utilize gentle, low-force pelvic-balancing techniques to stabilize the sacroiliac joints (or SI joints for short), reducing sciatica pain and hip pain. This will allow the mother to not only feel comfortable but also be able to move better, exercise, and prepare for a natural birth.
Hormonal Regulation: During pregnancy, we can say that “hormones get a little bit out of control”, your nervous system controls your endocrine (hormonal) system. By adjusting the spine, specifically the upper neck and sacrum, we can optimize their communication with the brain and different glands in the body that regulate pregnancy hormones, helping the mother physically and emotionally.
Emotional Support: Pregnancy can be an emotional roller coaster. The chiropractic adjustment helps the body shift from a sympathetic stress (Fight-or-Flight) state to a state of growth and repair (parasympathetic), lowering cortisol and helping you manage anxiety naturally.
The Webster Technique: Creating Space for Baby
Naturally, an expecting mother can be concerned when considering Chiropractic Care during pregnancy. At Pro-Holistic Care, we utilize various techniques to make the mother comfortable while receiving the Chiropractic adjustment and other treatments. One of those techniques is called the Webster Technique.
This very specific technique helps with one of the most common concerns we hear during pregnancy, which is a breech baby ( when the baby is positioned feet first or bottom first). While a breech position isn’t wrong, it is not ideal for a smooth, natural vaginal delivery. The Webster technique helps with breech pregnancy and also with pelvic imbalance, sciatica, and lower back pain.
What is the Webster Technique?
The Webster technique is a specific, gentle chiropractic analysis and adjustment that can reduce interference with the nervous system in the expecting mother and balance the maternal pelvic muscles and ligaments. This incredible technique has allowed us to help hundreds of expecting patients at Pro-Holistic Care feel better during and after pregnancy.
How it works: This well researched webster technique focuses on the alignment of the sacrum and pays special attention to the round ligaments that attach to the mother’s uterus. When the pelvis is balanced, the uterus can expand symmetrically, giving the baby the maximum amount of room to move into the best position for birth
Benefits: This technique not only helps with a baby’s position, but it’s also known to reduce labor time and decrease the need for painful interventions during the pregnancy and birth.
Movement/Exercises for an “Easy” Labor
We recommend that all chiropractic patients exercise to complement our care, getting stronger, more agile, and healthier; the same recommendations are given to expecting mothers. It is highly recommended that a pregnant mother exercise during this beautiful process. The fitter the mother is and the more she moves, the healthier that she gets, something that is beneficial for the mother and the baby. If the mother doesn’t suffer from any condition during pregnancy, mobility exercises are highly recommended.
We recommend these specific exercises to maintain flexibility in the pelvic floor and hips, which is extremely important for a healthy and relaxed pregnancy. Please find these exercises online by copying and pasting the name of each one into your browser.
For Daily Comfort:
Child’s Pose: Opens the hips and takes the weight of the baby off the spine
Bound Angel (Butterfly): Gentle stretch for the inner thighs and pelvic basin
Bridges: Strengthen the glutes and hamstrings to support the growing belly.
For an Easier Labor:
Figure Four: Stretches the piriformis and glute muscles to prevent sciatica
Dead Bug: Safely strengthens the deep core without straining the belly.
Cat/Cow: Gently moves the spine and encourages the baby to stay in an “optimal” position.
The Psoas muscle: A very important muscle to take into consideration during pregnancy
The psoas muscle, a deep core muscle that connects your lumbar spine to the anterior upper thigh, is very important and can affect your comfort during pregnancy.
The Complication: When the mother’s psoas muscle tightens, it pulls the pelvis forward, leading to lower back pain, and even “tucks” the tailbone, making the birth canal smaller.
The Stretch (The “Half-Kneel”): You can easily stress this muscle by kneeling on one knee, using a cushion, tucking your tailbone under, and leaning slightly forward until you feel a stretch in the front of the hip. Hold this position for 30 seconds on each side daily. The simple stretch can help relieve this muscle, allowing the mother’s pelvis to move freely.
Nutrition During Pregnancy
The expecting mother needs to follow a clean, healthy diet rich in green leafy vegetables, whole grains, natural fat from avocado, coconut oil, eggs, beans, organic grass-fed butter, and clean, healthy protein. This will benefit not only the mother and the baby’s weight gain during pregnancy, but also the baby; it also helps prepare the body for a gentle and healthy birth. It is also important to avoid too much sugar, junk, or ultra-processed foods, and alcohol.
5 Essential Supplements for Mom & Baby
Using supplements during pregnancy can help provide key nutrients that the mother and the baby need to grow healthier. A good prenatal supplement can go a long way toward supporting you before, during, and after pregnancy. This Prenatal supplement should include at least these five essential supplements for the Mother and the baby.
- Folate in the form of Methylfolate: Methylfolate is the natural form of the nutrient folate; this is important for neural tube development and brain health.
- Vitamin D3/K2: Essential for immune health and the baby’s bone development.
- Calcium: Supports the skeletal structure of both mom and baby.
- Iron: Anemia as your blood volume increases by nearly 50%
- Iodine: Critical for a baby’s brain development and thyroid function.
These supplements can be taken individually, but a good prenatal supplement should include them and much more, which is important for both the mom and the baby.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
Absolutely. We use specialized “pregnancy pillows” and chiropractic tables that adapt to the mother’s needs for proper and delicate adjustments. The pillow and the tables allow the mother to lie face down comfortably and safely, regardless of how far along the pregnancy is. Our adjustments are extremely gentle, focusing on precise alignment rather than heavy force.
When should you start seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy?
You can start at any time during the pregnancy; the sooner the better. Many women start their care before conception to ensure their pelvis is balanced and ready for the physical changes ahead.
Can chiropractic adjustments cause miscarriage?
There is no clinical evidence to suggest that chiropractic care increases the risk of miscarriage. By reducing systemic stress and improving the nervous system function, chiropractic supports a healthy environment for the developing baby. Our adjustments are non-invasive and tailored to the delicate needs of an expectant mother.
Can you go to the chiropractor in the first trimester?
Absolutely, and if often recommended to help manage the hormonal shifts, nausea, and fatigue.
Is it normal to have lower back pain in early pregnancy?
While common due to the surge of hormonal changes, especially relaxin, loosening ligaments and tendons, pain can occur. But “normal” should not equal “acceptable.” Early back pain could be a sign that your spine was already misaligned. And the added changes simpling are highlighting the lower back issue.
How do you relieve pelvic pain during pregnancy?
Relief comes from a combination of techniques: adjustments using the Webster technique, manual work to ligaments, tendons, and muscles that need attention, and simple strategies at home for sleeping and exercising.
Is it normal for your pelvis to hurt during pregnancy?
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) affects many women as the baby’s weight increases. Chiropractic care is highly effective at restoring pelvic balance and movement, which usually reduces pain or eliminates this discomfort.
How do chiropractic adjustments help keep mom and baby healthy?
For mom, adjustments reduce labor time and prevent chronic pain; for baby, a balanced pelvis means more room to grow and a better chance of reaching the optimal “head-down” position for birth.
Our goal with anyone thinking about getting pregnant, is already pregnant or just having a baby is to evaluate properly, to educate about the many natural options we offer, to ultimately help with pain, stress, and support during the incredible changes and challenges of growing a family. We can also help babies grow healthy with chiropractic care, an all-natural and safe option for your family. Hopefully we will see you soon.
