Stop Sugary Drink in Children’s

A typical teenager is drinking a bathtub of sugary drinks every year, a UK survey has discovered—and US teenagers could be drinking even more.

Even four-year-olds are drinking the equivalent of half a bathtub of sugary drinks every year, says the UK’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

Teenagers—aged between 11 and 18 years—are drinking three times the recommended limit, and sugary drinks are their main source of added sugar. Younger children, aged from four years to 11, and adults are both drinking around twice the maximum recommended amount of added sugar.

Obese children are five times more likely to become obese adults, and carrying too much weight increases the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, studies have shown.

The American Heart Association recommends not to exceed this amount of sugar daily:

– 3 teaspoons or 12 grams a day for children
– 6 teaspoons or 24 grams a day for Women
– 9 teaspoons or 36 grams a day for Men


… honestly my opinion is that we do not need any teaspoons or any  grams of sugar per day, after all that is a very little amount per day and our body will want more.

Plus even “healthy drinks” are a problem, for example Naked Juice, which is considered “super healthy” because it is 100% natural fruits, contains 57 grams of sugar (around 14.25 teaspoons)

I Hear Chiropractors Make You Go a Million Times

So there are a few “negatives”(envision me doing air quotes please) that people have heard about chiropractors.  I get asked a few specific questions over and over again about chiropractors.  I am only going to cover one of them in this article but no worries I will get to the others!  One of these FAQ’s is why does the chiropractor make you go in so many times…aka…ugh he wanted me to come in 3 times a week!!….aka I went a couple times but it didn’t do anything. Ok, that last one is a slight variation but still relevant.  

People are unsure of the reason and often skeptical of chiropractors because they are told in many cases that the Chiro needs to see them 3 times a week for a few weeks, a few months in some cases, and taper down treatment after that.  Here is where your Chiro, me included, may have left out some really important information that would in most cases make this make total sense to you.  It’s so engrained in our chiropractic heads that we forget not everyone knows these reasons and when we fail to explain, our patients and potential patients miss out on valuable care because they just don’t have all the information.  Here is where I come in, let me tell you why!

So I might sound like a bit of a smart ass here but it’s the only way to say it….the reason you have to come for care more often, in the beginning, is because while chiropractic care IS awesome, it is a type of therapy done on the body, NOT, unfortunately, MAGIC!!  If I could cure any ailment in three visits I think I would have to be considered an actual miracle worker, but I’m just a doctor.  What most people don’t realize is that we are actually treating you LESS than almost any doctor has ever treated you for anything!  

That’s right!! But how can that be?? Let’s talk about Grandma (at least mine anyway), that’s being treated for high blood pressure.  She is on 2 meds taken once a day each. So her doctor is treating her 730 times a year!! Each one of those pills is that doctor’s treatment.  He isn’t a Magical Merlin Wizard Magician that cured my 82-year-old Grandmother’s high blood pressure in 3 office visits a year. He can just send you home with the treatment (not a cure) because it’s a pill.  Us chiros can’t do that.  Sure we may give you some supplements to take at home but we need to physically see you and touch you to treat you, which means I need you in my office.

Think about the last time someone you know had any other treatment on earth, think physical therapy, talk therapy,  if it only happened 3 times a year no one is going to be getting anywhere.  To make real change in the human body takes time and patience.  So maybe I need to see you 3 times a week for 6 weeks and go from there.  I think a healthy body is worth the time and effort. Once we have results I don’t need to see you that often.  But don’t worry you still get to come in and maintain those improvements.

You’ll just have to live with not seeing me multiple times a week 🙂

Chiropractic Adjustment and Sinusitis

Your sinuses consist of eight hollow spaces in the bones of the forehead, cheeks and temples. Healthy, open sinuses are lined with sticky mucus to ensure that air going into the lungs is moist, warm and free from dust, dirt, and pollutants. Without these filters, lungs, kidneys and blood can become permeated with toxins.

In sinusitis or sinus infection, the linings are inflamed. The tissues become full of mucus and drainage is blocked. Increased pressure causes pain, swelling around the eyes, clogged nasal passages, chills, fever, dizziness and loss of appetite. Some people are more prone to this condition in the fall, especially with pollen, mildew, and mold allergies.

How does Chiropractic Care help?

The Doctor of Chiropractic knows that sinus sufferers receive excellent relief through removal of obstructions to the proper drainage of the sinuses, specifically in the neck and back. When vertebra alignment is off the muscles that attach to them can become swollen or spastic and close off the lymphatic drainage of the head and neck. Manual or massage therapies can be of great benefit, too. I like to use colloidal silver to help drainage and prevent or fight infection.

In combination with Chiropractic Care Consider this:

  1. Oil of Oregano

Oregano oil contains two powerful compounds of carvacrol and thymol that have powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. I recommend 500 milligrams of oregano oil four times per day.

  1. Grapefruit seed extract

Grapefruit seed extract has potent antiviral properties. This is why it is included in many nasal and throat sprays.  I recommend using a grapefruit seed extract nasal spray four times per day.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential to proper function of the immune system, which is the system that protects your body from getting infections and also helps your body to fight infections once it has one. As an antioxidant, vitamin C also helps guard our cells from free radical damage.  Free radicals are found in things that can commonly contribute to the development of sinus infections like air pollution and cigarette smoke.  I recommend 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C three times per day.

  1. Garlic

Garlic is one of nature’s best antibiotics. Since colds often lead to a sinus infection, garlic is an awesome way not only to naturally treat a sinus infection, but to prevent it in the first place. For general health promotion for adults, the World Health Organization recommends a daily dose of two to five grams (about one clove) of fresh garlic, 0.4 to 1.2 grams of dried garlic powder, two to five milligrams of garlic oil, 300 to 1,000 milligrams of garlic extract, or other formulations that are equal to two to five milligrams of allicin.

  1. Neti Pot

Using a neti pot with a saline solution can also greatly improve sinus issues and clear the nasal passage ways. Research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal has even shown that neti pot usage can eliminate some symptoms of chronic sinusitis and maintain positive outcomes over a six month time span. According to Dr. Paul Little, lead author and a professor of medicine at the University of Southampton, “In addition to improving sinus symptoms, headaches were reduced, there was less use of over-the-counter remedies, and people also said they were less likely to contact the doctor again for a future attack of sinusitis.”

  1. Add Moisture

Whether it’s a humidifier, saline nasal spray, or sitting in a steam-filled bathroom, adding more moisture to the air and your nasal passages can really help to reduce congestion.  I highly recommend sleeping with a humidifier while you have a sinus infection. You can also purchase a natural saline nasal spray that you can use several times a day (following package instructions). Steam inhalation is especially good at reducing sinus headaches.

  1. Essential Oils (Contact Dr. Rae with moe information about Essential Oils)

To naturally clear the sinuses, using eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil can be highly effective. These essential oils can naturally open up the sinuses, clear mucus and eliminate infections. Rub one drop of each on the roof of the mouth (only do this with food grade essential oils). Then drink water. Another great idea is to diffuse essential oils into the air so you can breathe them in.

Avoid This:

Avoid nasal sprays that dry out your sinuses as they will prompt the mucosal membrane to just make more mucus. (ever notice that you just keep using it and the sinus never really stays cleared up?)

And consider staying away from cigarette smoke altogether. Your diet can keep you inflamed and sugars, flour, fried food, and salts will be the most likely to make sinuses worse.

12 Food Additives to Remove From Your Diet

Many food additives have been studied and linked to various diseases. Becoming informed about the additives in everyday food items can make for an easier shopping experience and healthier food for everyone.

Here’s a list of some of the most medically questionable and harmful additives in everyday foods:

  1. Sodium nitrite
  2. BHA & BHT
  3. Propyl gallate
  4. Monosodium glutamate
  5. Trans fats
  6. Aspartame
  7. Acesulfame-K
  8. Food colorings (Blue, Red, Green, Yellow)
  9. Olestra
  10. Potassium bromate
  11. White sugar
  12. Sodium chloride (salt)

Since some of these may not be familiar to you, sodium nitrite is a preservative added most commonly to bacon, ham, hot dogs, sandwich meats, and smoked fish. BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are other preservatives added to foods like cereal, gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. Propyl gallate is found in meats, chicken soup base, and gum. All of these preservatives have been linked to cancer.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) can cause migraines and other adverse effects. Trans fats are being eliminated from most foods, as the studies linking them to heart disease, strokes, and kidney problems are widely accepted.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in products like NutraSweet and Equal as well as diet foods and soft drinks. And acesulfame-K is a newer sweetener used in soft drinks and some baked goods.

Many food colorings have been banned by the FDA, but some can still be found in foods that require a particular color. Olestra was common for a time in potato chips as an additive that prevented fat from being absorbed in your digestive system. Food colorings have been tied to cancer and Olestra also blocks vitamins from being processed.

Potassium bromate is sometimes added to white flour, breads, and rolls to increase the volume of the products, but it has cancer-causing properties that have prompted some states in America to actually require a label to that effect.

Finally, white sugar and sodium chloride (salt) can be dangerous if not kept to a minimum.

Green Tea Can Help you Lose Weight!

Green tea can help you lose weight. Several studies have suggested that the flavonoids and caffeine in green tea can help elevate metabolic rate, increase fat oxidation and even improve insulin activity. One study showed that those who consumed green tea and caffeine lost an average of 2.9 pounds during a 12-week period, while sticking to their regular diet. Another study suggested the increase in calorie output was equal to about 100 calories over a 24-hour period.

You don’t need to drink a lot of green tea to help you lose weight. While weight loss benefits vary based on different dynamics, they have been found by drinking as little as 2.5 cups of green tea per day.

Even though green tea can mildly increase metabolism and fat burning, the effects are modest when it comes to actual pounds lost. However, every little bit adds up and it may work even better when combined with other effective weight loss strategies like eating more protein and cutting carbs.

 

Some green tea varieties are better for weight loss than others. If you’re all about that green and on a weight-loss mission, you might want to choose Matcha green tea—the richest green tea source of nutrients and antioxidants.

There’s a right and wrong way to brew green tea. When brewing green tea, take a little extra care, as boiling water is bad for the precious catechins (tea healthy chemicals). Do bring your water to a boil, but let it rest for about for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, pour the water over the tea and brew for about one minute before serving. Of course, the brew time can be made shorter or longer, depending on your taste.

Green tea has many health benefits. It contains many nutrients, including antioxidants and anti-cancer and brain-healthy compounds. Regardless of whether or not you’ll shed pounds with green tea, drink it anyway.


But be careful not to pile on the honey or sugar, use stevia instead.
