Test your Brain in 20 Seconds

June 22, 2017

Struggle to balance on one leg? It is a simple act that reduces many to wobbling and windmilling, but there may be a place for it in medicine. According to new research, an inability to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer could signal brain damage in otherwise healthy individuals.

This Bug Increase Heart Attacks

June 20, 2017

bacteriaheart

Do you feel like you heart is protected when your cholesterol levels are normal?

Are you immune to heart disease just because you have been informed you have normal cholesterol levels? If you have been a reader of my articles for any length of time or saw my video about coconut oil and cholesterol,  you should know that cholesterol is not the culprit we have all been led to believe.

Half the folks who die of a heart attack never had high cholesterol. There are other more important markers to consider if you want to know your risk of getting a heart attack or stroke.

Again, remember correcting elevated cholesterol does not guarantee immunity from a heart attack.

Today, I want you to learn one unappreciated cause of silent coronary artery disease.

This silent cause is from a bacteria called Chlamydia. In fact, 4 out of 5 coronary artery plaques examined contain antibodies to this bug. Chlamydia is a bacterial pathogen that will eat away at your coronary arteries.

Tests like C-Reactive Protein (CRPhs) and fibrinogen are indicators of raging inflammation or hidden infection, signaling the need to check for, among other things, Chlamydia.

You may be wondering how do you get Chlamydia?

This bug is a common cause of colds, flu, or bronchitis, and we’ve all had these.

But for some folks, this is not the end of the story, for the coronary plaque can emerge decades after a common cold.

Again if you have had coronary artery plaque found from a Heart Scan (calcium score), elevated hsCRP and/or fibrinogen, your next step is to get the antibody test to Chlamydia pneumonia.

The problem is not many doctors including cardiologists are familiar with Chlamydia as a diagnosable and treatable cause of coronary artery plaque.

You now have increased knowledge to prevent or minimize your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

“For the past six decades, saturated fats and cholesterol have been wrongly vilified as the central culprit of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. However, research has demonstrated that it’s actually sugar, refined carbohydrates, trans fats and processed vegetable oils found in many processed foods that are the real enemy”

The Weekly Adjustment: Chiropractic care and Weight Loss

June 15, 2017

Chiropractic adjustments rarely receive recognition for their ability to assist in weight loss. However, a Chiropractic adjustment directly changes body chemistry, a result proven to be a major factor in helping both men and women lose weight. The sound science behind the benefits of an adjustment clearly shows the connection between spinal health and weight loss. Losing body fat is a challenge that connects with overall body function. Losing body fat while gaining and keeping muscle revolves around proper body chemistry. Balancing body chemistry derives from balancing hormones.

A Chiropractic adjustment not only balances body hormones but also creates an overall improved state of wellness. The spine directly interacts with the part of the brain (hypothalamus) that controls all major hormones, including those that deal with the weight loss and muscle gain. Interference occurs within the central nervous system whenever a spinal vertebra misaligns or moves incorrectly, resulting in a vertebral subluxation. The interference triggers an increase in stress hormones and a decrease of growth hormones through a stimulated hypothalamus. This alteration in stress hormones prevents the body’s ability to reduce amino acid breakdown and recycle amino acids from the blood.

The breakdown of muscle and the loss of fat are all mediated by hormones. Chiropractic adjustments help balance good hormones and decrease bad hormones through the spine’s direct relationship with the brain. No amount of protein that can be consumed in the form of food, powders, shakes, or bars can force the body to spare muscle or manipulate fat stores when hormones are out of balance. Multiple lifestyle factors also alter the balance of body chemistry, forcing the loss of muscle and accumulation of fat.

Poor spinal health exists as one major example often overlooked by almost every medical doctor, nutritionist, trainer, or weight loss strategist. Many people who begin receiving Chiropractic adjustments find it easier to lose fat and gain muscle using their previously established regimen of diet and exercise. Chiropractic adjustments facilitate changes in body chemistry which can only be balanced within the nervous system. Creating a subluxation-free environment empowers the body to balance hormones and improve overall wellness from the inside-out.

Spinal Pain and Acupuncture

Tension in your back, stress in the back, neck and shoulders all have a role to play at the level of stress manifesting in a physical way.

The shoulders are more elevated. The neck becomes a little stiffer, as does what appears to be the entire back. It seems that the musculature just won’t relax, or it is short lived when we do something about it.

The body adapts to stressing, to almost quite literally ‘carry the burden’ so to speak. Chronic stress over-activates the sympathetic nervous system. The appreciate system is the part of the autonomic nervous system that originates in the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spinal cord.

It acts in opposition to the parasympathethic system such as speeding up the heart rate, reducing digestive secretions, contracting the blood vessels, regulating the sweat glands and stimulating the secretion of glucose into the liver.

The parasympathetic nervous system is the part of the autonomic nervous system that originates in the brain stem and lower part of the spinal cord that acts in opposition to the sympathetic system, by inhibiting the physiological effects of stimulating digestive secretions, slowing the heart rate, constricting pupils or dilating the blood vessels.

As you can see these two opposing systems within the body require a dynamic tension that acts in balance to the body’s requirements. But, stress affects these two systems, directly – physically and indirectly- mentally and emotionally. Now, chronic stress as stated before can over-activate the sympathetic system such as causing pain and tension along the spinal cord up into the neck and shoulder areas.

This constriction prevents the free-flow of what we call ‘qi’ in Chinese’s medicine. From our perspective, there are four channels or meridians that run parallel to the spinal column. These are known as the bladder meridians. Now as an organ, the bladder itself is called the ‘Minister of the resevoir’.

It is responsible for storing and excreting urinary waste products passed down from the kidneys, but as an energy system, the bladder system is directly related to the autonomic nervous system via the four parallel channels to the spinal cord. These four channels run from head to toe. Acupuncture stimulation and Chinese’s massage can induce total relaxation by instructing the autonomic nervous system into its normal parasympathetic mode.

As you can see from above, the autonomic system has many functions, as do the bladder meridians. That means that not only stiff muscles, back injuries, or stress induced nervous tension in the musculature can be treated, it means the vital organs and overall functioning as the body can be treated via these meridians and their points, known as ‘back shu’ points.

Quite often these points can be used alongside the front points on the body for a treatment. However, your acupuncturist will determine the treatment you require. But, if you do carry tension, you know you are stressed in your life, then why not ask your acupuncturist for a treatment on your back for this? You’ll be amazed with the results.

The Weekly Adjustment #11: Chiro and Exercise

June 8, 2017

“Arnold Schwarzenegger about Chiropractic”

I am very fortunate to have, so-to-speak, my in-house chiropractor, Dr. Franco Colombu, as my own personal chiropractor. So, I visit Franco regularly, and he comes over to my house. He adjusts my wife, my kids, me, everybody gets an adjustment. And we feel always great when Franco leaves. Even when I have athletic injuries he’s always there for me, and helps me. So it’s really terrific, and I know that first hand. That’s why I always will be traveling around, all over the world, talking highly about the profession of chiropractic. You chiropractic doctors are really miracle workers, and that’s why it’s really great to have you here, part of the Arnold Classic. Because, like I said, the Arnold Classic and Fitness Weekend are about health and about fitness and preventive care.”

Three benefits of Chiropractic for Sport and exercise stress

Injury Prevention/Performance Enhancement

As Chiropractors when treating athletes we would treat the whole person, and tailor a comprehensive program aimed at injury avoidance. Initial evaluations should include not only traditional orthopedic tests, neurological examinations, and consideration to supplement physical exam findings with any additional diagnostic evaluations, if appropriate or a referral if indicated. Numerous studies support the fact that chiropractic care helps athletes achieve an optimal level of performance. A Canadian research team included chiropractic care in the rehabilitation program of 16 injured female long-distance runners. The runners recovered quickly; seven of them actually scored “personal best” performances while under chiropractic care, although there may be other contributing factors.

To Decrease Pain

The spine is an important physical structure that contains many pain-sensitive tissues:  Most notably, joints, muscles, nerves, discs and ligaments. If there , re any abnormal alignment patterns in the spinal column, this can place an abnormal amount of stress and strain on any one of these tissues. In a recent article reviewing the effectiveness of spinal manipulation, chiropractic adjustments were consistently better than other medical options in reducing the intensity of acute low back pain, plus restoring normal function, both for short-term and long-term effects.

Undo the punishment the body takes in sports

Many athletes swear by the positive effects of chiropractic when talking about their personal successes. Two notable names like Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Dan O’Brien and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to name a few, swear by their chiropractors. Athletic performance is affected by a combination of strength, flexibility, speed and coordination. Participating in sports is encouraged because of the many benefits. Not only is a person getting exercise when playing, but they are also developing fine motor skills, learning about teamwork and fair play and of course building friendships. But their bodies are also taking impacts no matter what sport they are playing.

When the spine exhibits imperfections in movement and/or alignment, the resulting vertebral subluxations can create focal areas of irritation in the nervous system, which subsequently interfere with the optimum functions of all other systems. As a result, athletic performance suffers. When athletes are adjusted regularly, they will often attribute their success to regular chiropractic care.

So, Where is your Chiropractor?

Acupuncture for Anxiety

June 6, 2017

acuancxiety

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a psychological and physiological state characterized by excessive, exaggerated Anxiety and worry about everyday life events with no obvious reasons for worry. People with symptoms of GAD tend to always expect disaster and continuously worry about things such as health, money, family, work, or school. With worry out of proportion or unrealistic, daily life becomes a constant state of worry, fear, and dread. Eventually, the Anxiety dominates the person’s thinking and can interfere with daily functioning. It has been estimated that anxiety disorders affect between 5 and 7% of the general population and that up to 29% of people will suffer from an anxiety disorder at least once during their lifetime.

Stress – At one time or another, all of us experience stress. These feelings are a healthy response to events in our lives that may feel beyond our control. When we are healthy and the stress is short-lived, we are usually able to recover without too much wear and tear to our overall health. However, when the stress is extreme, or if it lasts a long time, our emotional health and ultimately, our physical health begin to suffer.

Acupuncture is a powerful treatment for depression and Anxiety.  Acupuncture seeks to address body, mind, emotions, and spirit. The goal is to create harmony within ourselves and between ourselves and the world. This imbalance can take many forms and is ultimately discerned by the acupuncturist through an ongoing evaluation process which encompasses observation of posture, gait, palpation and asking about symptoms and history.

Our diagnosis describes your physical. General health and neuro-spinal imbalances. Stress, anger, or any intense emotion acts like a traffic jam, blocking the ability of our body to maintain balance. For example, many people who are very stressed out complain of upper back, shoulder and neck pain. This is because stress is causing tension in those areas, creating imbalances, causing pain, tightness, and often leading to headaches.

By inserting needles into the acupuncture points, which lie at specific predetermined anatomical locations, we stimulate body’s energy (Qi) to start the healing process and assist it in restoring its natural balance. Acupuncture points can help energy flow smoothly, and alleviate not only the symptoms of stress and anxiety but the stress and anxiety itself. From a Western viewpoint, acupuncture works to alleviate stress by releasing natural pain-killing chemicals in the brain, called endorphins. In addition, acupuncture improves circulation of blood throughout the body, which oxygenates the tissues and cycles out cortisol and other waste chemicals. The calming nature of acupuncture also decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and relaxes the muscles.

Positive changes in lifestyle and exercise are also very valuable to the anxiety sufferer. Activities such as stretch, exercise, and Yoga are excellent forms of mind-body exercise that can improve the ability to control both Anxiety and depression. Diet also plays an important part in the treatment of anxiety. Too much-refined sugars, for example, can cause wild fluctuations in blood sugar and insulin levels, which can significantly affect one’s mood and mental health. They also deplete B vitamins from the body, which can affect the nervous system. Excessive amounts of caffeine can increase anger and anxiety. As an adrenal stimulant, caffeine can ultimately lead to adrenal exhaustion and depression. Substituting refined sugar and caffeine with low glycemic foods and beverages can result in a reduced anxiety. Practicing these changes in conjunction with regular acupuncture treatments will provide the foundation for a positive change and medication free life for the anxiety sufferer.

The problems with anxiety – Medications – Benzodiazepines-Alprazolam (Xanax), Chlordiazepoxide (Librium), Clonazepam (Klonopin), Diazepam (Valium), Lorazepam (Ativan) A group of drugs that help reduce anxiety and have sedating effects. They work quickly, but they can be habit-forming and are usually prescribed for short-term use. They may cause drowsiness, constipation, or nausea. Buspirone (BuSpar)- An anti-anxiety drug that does not seem to cause drowsiness or dependence. However, you must take it for 2 weeks before feeling any effect. Side effects can include insomnia, nervousness, light-headedness, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, and headaches.

Antidepressants- Duloxetine (Cymbalta), Escitalopram (Lexapro), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Paxil), Venlafaxine (Effexor) A group of drugs that act on the same brain chemicals believed to be involved in anxiety.

Acupuncture in the treatment of anxiety has many excellences. In the hands of a trained, registered practitioner it is completely safe and free of side effects. It is immediate in result. While not every acupuncture session provides complete and full relief right away, as soon as you leave the acupuncturist (and in some cases the next morning), much of your anxiety should be diminished. Compare this to long-term treatments that generally require you to work on your anxiety a little at a time over a long period of time. For those with severe anxiety, that can be advantageous. It resolves the root issue of the anxiety alleviating all of the various symptoms. It does not interfere with other medications or treatments. It is suitable for all ages and states of health and perfectly safe during pregnancy.

An Acupuncture treatment is tailor-made to the patient. This means that rather than looking simply at “anxiety” and inserting “anxiety points”, it looks at how anxiety is affecting the individual specifically. What signs and symptoms are present for this individual at different times throughout their condition and treats accordingly leading to an anxiety free future.
